From Sept 15, renewal of driving licence just a click away Somit Sen Those residing in the island city will soon go for online registrations for getting driving licences renewed, applying for a change of address or getting a duplicate licence. At present, one can only apply online for a learnerpermanent driving licence. “From September 15, you can get online appointments for every work pertaining to your driving licence,“ said newly appointed Tardeo RTO boss Govind Saindane. He said the simple, transparent system will also eliminate the role of touts.“You will just have to go to our new version of Saarthi software and register to get a licence renewed, etc. You will be given an online tokenappointment using which you can come at the designated time and day to get the work done without having to wait in long queues or go through middlemen,“ he said. The new system at Tardeo RTO will begin from September 15. Forms will also be available online, and so one can just take the printout before arriving at the RTO, which will save time, an official said. It will facilitate citizens to come to the RTO on their own and get any driving-licence related work done hassle free. A similar online system for licence renewals will be replicated at other RTOs including Wadala (eastern suburbs) Andheri and Borivli (western suburbs) as well, a source said. Sources said the transport commissioner’s office is also keen on introducing a “virtual“ licence and RC book in near future, which means you can flash your licence from a smartphone in future instead of carrying a physical copy in your wallet al the time. “It will change the way RTOs work and is yet another initiative in line with making our RTO citizen-friendly ,“ a senior officer said. Some of the RTOs have al ready introduced the single window system -wherein the moment one enters the premises, there will be a helpdesk with officers and a few clerks “They will assist you and guide you to the counters and also help you with the forms required for submissions. The forms will be handed over to citizens free of cost so that they need not go back home to down load it from a computer.“
