New Delhi : The road transport and highways ministry has asked its officials and others in charge of national highway stretches to ensure that in the next three months each fuel station along the NHs have adequate toilet facilities for men and women.
In a circular issued last week to the officials concerned, the ministry has said that the toilets provided at fuel stations are ” small in size ” and cannot cater to road users. Moreover, there are often no separate toilets for men and women. The circular says, it’s also observed that the toilet units are not being maintained and are in unhygienic condition. Moreover, these are not accessible for all road users or are kept under lock and key.
The ministry has issued a standard format with separate facilities for women and men. Each section must have two urinals and one wash basin and water closet each. ” The toilet unit is provided at a standalone location within the retail outlet premises duly equipped with lighting, water and requisite cleaning accessories etc,” the circular said.
The ministry has said a separate access to all NH users with traffic signage of the availability of toilet facility along NHs should be provided and the toilets must be kept open round the clock.
